At around 1 am, Earl suddenly awoke. Something was off. He squinted in the dim light and saw Johnny fumbling around with the lantern. “Johnny, what do you think you’re doing?!” Earl exclaimed, his voice a mixture of confusion and annoyance. Johnny, startled, dropped the lantern with a clatter.
“I’m sorry, Earl,” Johnny replied sheepishly. “I thought I heard something outside the tent, like a rustling noise. I wanted to check it out without waking you.” Earl sighed, realizing his friend was simply being cautious. The woods were known for their wildlife, and it wasn’t uncommon to hear curious creatures investigating unfamiliar scents.
Despite his initial irritation, Earl’s curiosity was piqued. He listened carefully and heard the faint rustling Johnny had mentioned. They both decided to step outside and investigate, feeling a bit more awake now. Grabbing their flashlights, they unzipped the tent and stepped into the chilly night air.
