The teacher gave her fifth-grade class an assignment: Get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it. The next day the kids came back, and one by one, they began to tell their stories.

Kathy stood up confidently when it was her turn. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she shared the story her mother had told her.

“My mom told me about a little bird named Timmy,” Kathy began. “Timmy was a small sparrow living in a large forest. He was a curious bird, always eager to explore new places and make new friends. But there was one thing Timmy didn’t like: flying high in the sky. He was scared of heights and preferred staying close to the ground.”

“One day, as Timmy was hopping around the forest floor, he met a wise old owl named Oliver. Oliver noticed that Timmy never flew very high and asked him why. Timmy shyly admitted, ‘I’m afraid of flying high. What if I fall? It seems so dangerous up there.'”

“Oliver chuckled softly and said, ‘Timmy, the sky is where you belong. You’re a bird, after all! You have strong wings and a brave heart. You just need to trust yourself and take the leap.’ But Timmy shook his head, too scared to even try.”

“As the weeks passed, Timmy continued to explore the forest floor, watching other birds soar above him. He felt a little sad, wishing he could join them. One sunny morning, while Timmy was sitting under a tree, a strong wind began to blow. Suddenly, he found himself lifted off the ground, higher and higher into the sky. His heart raced, but he remembered Oliver’s words.”

“Kathy paused for a moment, glancing at her classmates, who were listening intently. Then she continued, ‘Timmy took a deep breath and spread his wings wide. Instead of panicking, he decided to enjoy the ride. To his surprise, he found flying was not scary at all; it was exhilarating! He soared through the sky, feeling free and alive like never before.'”

“After that day, Timmy realized he had been missing out on so much. He started flying higher and higher each day, exploring parts of the forest he had never seen before. He met new bird friends, learned to fly in different weather conditions, and even helped guide other young birds who were afraid of flying. Timmy had become a confident and joyful sparrow, all because he took a chance and trusted his wings.”

“When Kathy finished her story, her classmates applauded, and she smiled proudly. ‘The moral of the story,’ Kathy concluded, ‘is that sometimes we’re afraid to take risks because we’re scared of what might happen. But if we never try, we’ll never know what we’re capable of achieving. Like Timmy, we have to trust ourselves and take the leap, even when it seems scary.'”

The teacher nodded, pleased with Kathy’s story and its message. She thanked Kathy for sharing and asked the class to reflect on moments when they had been afraid to take risks. The students were inspired to think about how they could face their fears, just like Timmy had.

After class, Kathy’s friends gathered around her, chatting excitedly about their own experiences. One of her friends, Jack, said, “I was afraid to try out for the soccer team last year, but now I feel like I can do it. Thanks for the story, Kathy!”

As the bell rang and the students left the classroom, Kathy felt a sense of satisfaction. She realized that sharing stories could inspire and uplift others, just as her mother’s story had inspired her. That day, Kathy learned not only about courage but also about the power of storytelling.

And so, the little sparrow named Timmy became a symbol for the entire class, reminding them to spread their wings and soar above their fears. It was a lesson they would carry with them, not just in fifth grade, but throughout their lives.
