She looked up at him, her eyes widening in surprise before breaking into a grin. “Not at all,” she replied, gesturing to the empty seat beside her. “I could use some company.”
As he settled onto the stool, he couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement coursing through him. Here he was, a weathered old man with nothing to offer but his stories and his companionship, sitting beside a girl who seemed to embody everything he had lost.
